Channel NewsAsia launches 3D documentary

Singapore’s regional broadcaster, Channel NewsAsia on Tuesday launched a 3D documentary produced in Singapore for television at Asia’s largest broadcast technology trade fair, Broadcast Asia 2011. 

Called “24 Hour Asia”, it’s a co-production between Channel NewsAsia and InFocus Asia and is only the second made in Singapore 3D documentary for television. 

The documentary is supported by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), and is part of its initiative to develop 3D production capabilities and talents within Singapore’s television industry.

All this, to place Singapore at the technological forefront in Asia alongside Korea and Japan. 

The one-hour programme gets under the skin of three cities in Asia – Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore. 

The programme showcases a day-in-the-life of each city, capturing the unique tapestry of Asia’s dynamism and revealing each city’s secrets within 24 hours. 

And the 3D camera technology gives viewers a completely different experience and pulls them closer than ever before to the buzz and the energy that characterises each of these Asian cities. 

According to MediaCorp, the production team spent two months on development and pre-production, more than a month filming and another two months on post production on the documentary.

MediaCorp said there are plans to screen the full length 3D feature to the public, so as to have a view of how technology, money and soaring ambition have turned Singapore, Tokyo and Shanghai into the powerhouses they are today.

Ms Debra Soon, Managing Director of Channel NewsAsia, said: “We have seen an incredible progress in the area of 3D television technology and are pleased to be able to help lead television production in Singapore and Asia into this exciting technology by producing this documentary, which captures the heart and essence of Asia in a way never seen before. 

Most viewers have watched 3D programmes in the cinema but not on television.

Other partners in this project are Singapore post production company, Edit Lounge, and UK-based, Pro3D, which provided training and stereo-graphing expertise. 

24 Hour Asia – 3D is a one-hour documentary and will be made available to the international market after the launch at Broadcast Asia 2011.
