AWARD-WINNING Hongkong director Tsui Hark (Seven Swords, Triangle and Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame), has earned the nickname of the 3D director, thanks to his latest movie, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate 3D – the first wuxia film to be made in that genre.
In town last week to attend the movie’s gala premiere, Tsui took time off from his tight schedule to hold a filmmaking workshop and to meet the press.
He revealed that filming in 3D was not as difficult as one would imagine. On the contrary, it gave him immense pleasure to discover a new tool that would help advance the filmmaking industry.
“It’s like you having a knife and suddenly, you are being given a gun,” he said. “It’s a tool that’s more advanced and gives realistic results.
“But we have to be careful about the costumes and, especially, the make-up, as every little detail is revealed clearly in 3D. …
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate 3D, distributed by Golden Screen Cinemas, is now showing in cinemas nationwide in both Cantonese (3D version) and Mandarin (35mm film version).
