Underwater robots map Titanic's entire debris field in 3D

[Wired UK]

Oceanographic experts have pieced together the first complete map of the entire Titanic wreck site and debris field, using sonar technology and underwater robots. The team will reveal the entire map in April, on the 100-year anniversary of the ship’s maiden voyage. …

The 3D map will be used as a forensic tool, so scientists and archaeologists can further examine the wreck site in virtual space, and unearth more secrets of the famous ship’s sinking. The data has already proved that the ship’s stern rotated like a helicopter blade as it sank, rather than plunging straight down.

More details on the new findings will be saved for the History Channel’s documentary, which will broadcast on 15 April 2012, exactly 100 years since the Titanic sank.
