Digital Cinema Screen Conversions Rose 121% in 2010

The total number of digital and 3D cinema screens installed worldwide rose 121.8% in 2010, from 16,339 to 36,242, according to a report from IHS Screen Digest.

Of these, 3D screens currently account for 60.5% of all digital cinema installations, up from 55% in 2009; 3D screen growth also outpaced total growth at 144.3% year-over-year.

North America is home to 46.2% of all digital cinema screens (38.6% of 3D), compared to Europe with 28.2% of digital screens (34.3% of 3D), and Asia which hosts 21.6% of digital screens (21.2% of 3D).

IHS Screen Digest forecasts that the total number of digital screens worldwide is poised to exceed 100,000 by 2015, 41.7% of which are expected to be equipped for 3D.
