Looking to get into 3D but want an easy route that doesn’t cost big bucks? How about a HD 3D video and still camera whose street price is around $150? That sounds good to me so I put out my hand and when I pulled it back, ViewSonic’s 3DV5 Pocket 3D HD Camcorder was lying there. …

I should mention that Enhance’s LightLink came into good use here — it’s like one of those tungsten lights that those with Super 8 cameras used to use for lighting indoors — only here we have a grouping of heat-free white LEDs powered by a rechargeable battery pack. Besides not leeching power off the camcorder (as some units with their own LEDs do), the broad array of LEDS make for a nice diffuse lighting pattern — exactly what is needed when shooting people and scenes where you don’t want the contrast pushed too far off the scale. Add the fact that it comes with a hot-shoe, for those cameras/camcorders that have one as well as a universal mounting bracket, and it’s no wonder that I’ve been popping this baby out to use for shooting 3D indoors (even outside on those rare cloudy SoCal days too).

Now getting back to the ViewSonic, their 3DV5 does a good job at capturing 3D — and at a fair price that doesn’t skimp on features. Actually as regards the 3D side, the 3DV5 goes the extra mile compared to other cameras that don’t provide such a compact shape with glasses-free 3D previewing or for that matter, a multitude of 3D viewing options for after the video has been shot.
