3D Innovators Gather at X-Summit for Content Development, Research Session

As stereoscopic 3D becomes a more standardized feature in HDTVs, desktop displays and handheld devices, it’s presenting new opportunities for content developers.

For the gaming industry, however, many of the practices being followed are based on 3D cinema research, rather than video game research.

So a new industry organization is holding a series of free presentations to look at the best practices in S-3D game play, including issues related to comfort, effectiveness, and overall experience for both developers and end users. Presented by Createasphere, the 3D Road Show is led by 3D guru Keith Collea – a versatile and highly knowledgeable stereographer who has constructed 3D landscapes across a gamut of independent and studio features. He has worked on indies such as The Gene Generation and The Mortician 3D, as well as big-budget productions like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D and The Monkey King 3D (Asia’s largest 3D production to date).  The workshop will help attendees improve their skills and knowledge, and understand the choices in twin lens cameras, rigs and tools, post production workflows, visual effects creation and assembly, storage, projection, and delivery.

The Storytelling Cipher: Mapping Precise Story and Character Mechanics to Box Office Returns

Our Data & Analytics Project held “The Storytelling Cipher: Mapping Stories & Characters to Box Office Revenue” Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

This study leverages the Dramatic taxonomy of film narrative to infer which scene-level character and story attributes generate more box office returns, by genre. We are extending this study to ads and movie trailers.

The project researchers used machine learning to map 70+ story attributes for 300 films to their box office returns to extract which story mechanics or character features in film generated the most revenue. This was the first time granular story and character mechanics have been used to predict box office returns, which opens up many avenues to make more data-driven creative and development decisions throughout the industry.

What’s a good story? The question has been hanging without a scientific answer since the dawn of man. It seems that a story’s lack of clear mathematical structure and universal taxonomy would relegate such classification of stories to the qualitative – and highly subjective- empire of critics and … people.
