3D Becomes A Compulsory Choice for Filmgoers (China)

[CRI English]

Many filmgoers in China complain about the high price and uncomfortable glasses of 3D films, and that it is too hard to watch a 2D film, Jiefang Daily reported.

A woman named Zhu said that according to media reports, “The Adventures of Tintin” has three versions: IMAX 3D, regular 3D and 2D. But when searching the movie schedules, she found that only the 3D version is available in most cinemas.

Many filmgoers share the same feeling as Zhu. They complain about the heavy 3D glasses and inflated ticket prices. Some parents are worried that their children’s sight could be damaged after watching 3D films.

The main reason for cinemas’ preference on 3D versions is their higher profit. A 3D film ticket is always priced 33% or even 50% higher than that of a 2D film. Furthermore, the attendance of 3D films is generally higher than the same movie’s 2D version, according to the report. Since the number of screens is limited, cinemas are likely to screen 3D version.

People’s increasing demand for 2D films comes from the low quality of some new 3D films. Some experts believe that the great success of 3D film “Avatar” caused many producers to follow the 3D trend blindly without qualified technologies or sufficient investment.
