With the advent of 3D TV’s the general public have taken to the new technology, however there is now something that looks to put a stop to 3D TV!
No one likes to buy something that’s out of date, however the risk of 3D TV is high at the moment! Imagine inviting your friends round to watch the latest 3D Movie only to ask them to put on some £200 3D Glasses! Looking blankly at you they ask “Why? Don’t you have the latest 3D TV?”
Every week there is a news article talking about “Glasses Free 3D” (GF3D), basically saying that the new range of 3D TV’s will not require you to wear glasses at all. Also with the invention and release of the Nintendo 3DS demonstrating that the technology is possible, consumers are worried about buying into 3D TV’s that currently require 3D glasses.
Being a true AV Geek myself, I want the cutting edge of hardware/software/firmware and any other type of ware I can get my hand on! However most of my friends don’t even realise that my Denon has the latest and greatest firmware patch! However, it will be difficult to hide the fact that my 3D TV requires 3D Active Shutter Glasses! I would look like a fool asking my friends to put on their face, over £1,000 worth of outdated 3D equipment!
The general public are luckily not as pretentious as me, however they are still unwilling to buy a 3D TV whilst the market looks so unstable. After all a new 3D TV is a big purchase in these times!
Glasses Free 3D TV
Current glasses Free TV’s provide up to 9 “3D Sweet Spots” where if you keep you head still, you can view the 3D affect. Personally I am a fidget, my wife is also a massive fidget and for us, staying still for a full 2 hour film would be impossible. Anything over ½ a foot movement will completely kill the 3D affect.
There are rumors at the moment that “Microsoft Kinect” is going to be used (build in) to the latest “Samsung eye tracking” “Glasses Free 3D TV”! This will mean that the 3D sweet spots can be moved automatically to track the views eyes. If the sweet spot can be moved in this way then glasses free 3D TV will be born!
Should I Buy A 3D TV?
At the moment there are some great TV’s on the market. If you are looking to get a new TV then you might as well get a 3D TV as the picture is better than the current model (Due to the high refresh rate). However if you are happy with your current HDTV we recommend holding off for 6 months to see where Glasses Free Takes us.
