Skype announces HD Video Calls for PCs and TVs

Skype kicked off CES by announcing deals it has brokered with Panasonic and LG to offer Skype video chats via Internet-enabled HDTVs – and news that Skype 720p video calls will now be possible on PCs.

For HDTV: Skype software will be embedded into the Panasonic line of VIERA CAST HDTVs and LG’s new LCD and plasma HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access, both available by mid-2010.  Consumers will also need special $100-150 Webcams (available from the Skype store or from LG and Panasonic).  The new HDTVs will enable free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls in addition to conference calls with up to 24 other parties.

For the PC: The latest version of Skype for Windows can deliver up to 720p HD-quality video calling (1280 x 720 resolution, up to 30 fps).  System requirements include a high-speed broadband connection, a new HD Webcam, a PC with a 1.8 GHz processor and Skype 4.2 Beta for Windows.

Skype recommends high-speed broadband of at least 1 Mbps for 720p HD-quality video calls on either a PC or television.
