3D TV not yet a crowd favorite in the UK

[By James Patterson, Good 3D TV]

Though 3D TV is yet to impress the audience in a manner many had predicted it would, till date there are studies and reports published which indicates that in the United Kingdom the 3D TV market is getting ready for its mass acceptance soon.

Study carried out by Informa Telecoms & Media suggests 11 million homes would have a 3D TV in its premises in another five years. However active 3D TV users would be only half this number.

The term ‘active TV’ users is not to be confused with the ‘active and passive technology’ that 3D TV sets are divided into. The term ‘active 3D TV’ users here refers to that population who would be using the 3D TV set to view 3D content and not just plain old 2D.

According to the Guardian, there are currently 125,000 homes in UK with 3D TV and of these 90 percent use it for viewing 3D content.

The report by Informa Telecoms & Media predicts that this figure would rise by a whooping 100 times by 2016. Their report indicates that most all TV sets would be embedded with 3D capability even though just 42 percent people would be using the 3D technology part for their viewing.

“Irrespective of existing public demand for 3D, major set manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Panasonic, et al) increasingly see 3D capability as a feature that they must include in their sets, or the perception will be that rival manufacturers are producing a technically-superior product (with 3D included),” said Adam Thomas of Informa Telecoms & Media.

“The result is that an increasing proportion of TV sets are having 3D capability built into them. But instead of a USP, 3D is now often marketed as just one of the set’s benefits – along with features such as internet-connection capability and LED backlighting.”
