How James Cameron Hopes to Defeat the 3-D Hype Cycle

At the annual 3D Entertainment Summit today, Variety’s David Cohen showed this chart to Cameron: (above)

Created by Gartner, the chart shows the hype cycle as it relates to almost anything that gets hyped (new technology, celebrities, foods etc). Cohen pointed out that 3-D is currently in the “Trough of Disillusionment” and asked Cameron how the technology can get to the “Plateau of Productivity.”

“This represents perception, not reality,” insisted Cameron. “We have to turn around that perception.”

Cameron said his only worry about what he believes is a misperception about the state of 3-D is that the studios will react by pulling back on 3-D production. That could have a ripple effect on the TV side which Cameron believes needs to thrive in order for 3-D to become ubiquitous. When broadcast TV embraces 3-D, Cameron believes all movies will be filmed in 3-D to fill that large pipeline.  …
