Activision’s Call of Duty brand is one of the most popular shooter franchises in history, but it’s about to enter an entirely new dimension.
Activision this morning announced that Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops will be the first Call of Duty title to ship with 3D functionality. The game will come with day-one support for 3D-ready high definition televisions for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version of the game will be playable in 3D via NVIDIA’s 3D Vision-Ready technology.
According to Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, incorporating 3D in the game hasn’t always been a sure thing.
“Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience…we had to develop it for Black Ops,” he said.
Further, Black Ops will support 3D in every one of the game’s modes. Players will be able to fight through the campaign, online multiplayer, and therecently confirmed zombie mode in full 3D.
Call of Duty fans without a 3D-ready television or PC will be able to play the game in the standard presentation format.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is the follow up to last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which has made over one billion dollars. Black Ops will come in three variations, priced between $60 and $150. The game will feature the voices of Hollywood starsGary Oldman and Ed Harris, and is projected to sell over 12 million units in its lifetime.
Black Ops ships for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 9.
