Disney will add to its growing assortment of 3D Blu-ray titles when they release The Nightmare Before Christmas in the format on August 30th. After numerous theatrical 3D releases, the new edition of Disney’s perennial Halloween favorite will include Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital versions of the film. The SRP has been set at $49.99.

Disney will also offer a 3D download of the film for $25.00.

In terms of special features, the release looks nearly identical to the Collector’s Edition of the film released back in 2008. Along with a special introduction by Tim Burton, these features include:

Both Disney and Tim Burton are all over 3D right now, and when you put the two together you get The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-Disc 3D Combo Pack, hitting homes on August 20. While the release will get the “before Christmas” part right, it seems Disney might be blowing its wad a little early.

We’ve already heard about the calculated Lion King and Beauty and the Beastreleases, which proves Disney has spent a lot of time carefully deciding when and how films will head onto 3D. While Burton’s Alice in Wonderland 3D success has certainly given him more importance with the studio, it seems as if more money would be made converting a vaulted Disney film onto 3D. However, because The Nightmare Before Christmas was converted on to 3D and had a 3D theatrical run back in 2007, it looks like Disney is under the “Why not?” impression.

The studio isn’t leaving the expensive $49.99 release totally up to chance. The 3-disc 3D Combo Pack will come with an overload of extras beginning with a special introduction by Tim Burton, an un-cut version of Burton’s Frankenweenie short, and a short film called VincentThe Nightmare Before Christmas-oriented featurettes will include a “Tim Burton’s Making of” documentary discussing the stop-motion animation process and “The Worlds of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Finally, deleted scenes, storyboards, the original theatrical trailer, a “Haunted Mansion” segment, and commentary from—you guessed it—Tim Burton will come with the 3-disc purchase.

What’s more impressive: the number of times 3D was spit out in this article, or the number of times Tim Burton managed to splash his name all over everything?

Tekken Hybrid Coming To Bluray

[Posted by lpfisher. The Gamers Hub]

Namco has announced that the upcoming film Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D will be coming to Bluray soon after its one-night only theater release on July 26. This Bluray, also containing the PS3 exclusive Tekken Tag Tournament HD, is being dubbed Tekken Hybrid.

For those not in the know, Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D is a fully CG production following Xiaoyu Ling on her mission to gather intel on Tekken newcomer Shin Kamiya. Blood Vengeance is written by Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell; Cowboy Bebop) and produced by Digital Frontier (Death Note).

Sounds like a good package to me.

Specification for Naming VFX Image Sequences Released

ETC’s VFX Working Group has published a specification for best practices naming image sequences such as plates and comps. File naming is an essential tool for organizing the multitude of frames that are inputs and outputs from the VFX process. Prior to the publication of this specification, each organization had its own naming scheme, requiring custom processes for each partner, which often resulted in confusion and miscommunication.

The new ETC@USC specification focuses primarily on sequences of individual images. The initial use case was VFX plates, typically delivered as OpenEXR or DPX files. However, the team soon realized that the same naming conventions can apply to virtually any image sequence. Consequently, the specification was written to handle a wide array of assets and use cases.

To ensure all requirements are represented, the working group included over 2 dozen participants representing studios, VFX houses, tool creators, creatives and others.  The ETC@USC also worked closely with MovieLabs to ensure that the specification could be integrated as part of their 2030 Vision.

A key design criteria for this specification is compatibility with existing practices.  Chair of the VFX working group, Horst Sarubin of Universal Pictures, said: “Our studio is committed to being at the forefront of designing best industry practices to modernize and simplify workflows, and we believe this white paper succeeded in building a new foundation for tools to transfer files in the most efficient manner.”

This specification is compatible with other initiatives such as the Visual Effects Society (VES) Transfer Specifications. “We wanted to make it as seamless as possible for everyone to adopt this specification,” said working group co-chair and ETC@USC’s Erik Weaver. “To ensure all perspectives were represented we created a team of industry experts familiar with the handling of these materials and collaborated with a number of industry groups.”

“Collaboration between MovieLabs and important industry groups like the ETC is critical to implementing the 2030 Vision,” said Craig Seidel, SVP of MovieLabs. “This specification is a key step in defining the foundations for better software-defined workflows. We look forward to continued partnership with the ETC on implementing other critical elements of the 2030 Vision.”

The specification is available online for anyone to use.
