Disney will add to its growing assortment of 3D Blu-ray titles when they release The Nightmare Before Christmas in the format on August 30th. After numerous theatrical 3D releases, the new edition of Disney’s perennial Halloween favorite will include Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital versions of the film. The SRP has been set at $49.99.
Disney will also offer a 3D download of the film for $25.00.
In terms of special features, the release looks nearly identical to the Collector’s Edition of the film released back in 2008. Along with a special introduction by Tim Burton, these features include:
- What’s This? Jack’s Haunted Mansion Holiday Tour – Viewers choose the way they want to tour Disneyland’s Holiday Haunted Mansion. “On Track” explores a tricked-out version of the Haunted Mansion, while “Off Track” reveals what went into creating all the creepy fun.
- Tim Burton’s Original poem narrated by Christopher Lee – Tim Burton’s poem that inspired the creation of the movie. Now, the original verse comes to creepy life as performed by legendary actor Christopher Lee.
- Film Commentary – commentary by producer and writer Tim Burton, director Henry Selick and composer Danny Elfman.
- Introduction To Frankenweenie! – A new un-cut version of the short film with an introduction by Tim Burton.
- Vincent– Tim Burton’s short film from 1982.
- The Making of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – Go behind the scenes of the very first full-length stop motion animated movie with the filmmakers.
- The Worlds of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – Witness the creation of the film’s richly imagined dreamscapes, including Halloween Town, Christmas Town and the Real World.

Both Disney and Tim Burton are all over 3D right now, and when you put the two together you get The Nightmare Before Christmas 3-Disc 3D Combo Pack, hitting homes on August 20. While the release will get the “before Christmas” part right, it seems Disney might be blowing its wad a little early.
We’ve already heard about the calculated Lion King and Beauty and the Beastreleases, which proves Disney has spent a lot of time carefully deciding when and how films will head onto 3D. While Burton’s Alice in Wonderland 3D success has certainly given him more importance with the studio, it seems as if more money would be made converting a vaulted Disney film onto 3D. However, because The Nightmare Before Christmas was converted on to 3D and had a 3D theatrical run back in 2007, it looks like Disney is under the “Why not?” impression.
The studio isn’t leaving the expensive $49.99 release totally up to chance. The 3-disc 3D Combo Pack will come with an overload of extras beginning with a special introduction by Tim Burton, an un-cut version of Burton’s Frankenweenie short, and a short film called Vincent. The Nightmare Before Christmas-oriented featurettes will include a “Tim Burton’s Making of” documentary discussing the stop-motion animation process and “The Worlds of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Finally, deleted scenes, storyboards, the original theatrical trailer, a “Haunted Mansion” segment, and commentary from—you guessed it—Tim Burton will come with the 3-disc purchase.
What’s more impressive: the number of times 3D was spit out in this article, or the number of times Tim Burton managed to splash his name all over everything?
