More than 100 tablets are expected to invade CES this week, it was announced Tuesday as CEA offered its annual look at the CE industry. The big stories included tablets, Internet-enabled TVs, sensors and apps. Among the announcements:
— Apps are huge, coming to tablets this year.
— 17 million tablets were sold worldwide in 2010, and CEA expects sales of over 30 million for 2011.
— Portability is the main reason for tablet purchases this year.
— In 2011, 20 million E-readers are expected to ship, with up to 45 million by 2014.
— Handsets are in decline, while smart phones are driving mobile phone category growth.
— 3D will grow beyond the TV to areas such as automobiles and mobile phones.
— By 2014, more than half of TVs that are shipped will be Internet-enabled.
— 9% of all TV sets sold in 2010 were Internet-enabled. 3% of sets sold were 3DTVs.
— Apps are taking advantage of sensors.
— 2.5 million Xbox Kinect systems sold in the first 25 days of release.
— Expectations for mobile web usage include paying bills, streaming music, watching live content and accessing files from home networks.
— Apps will enhance hardware and become an integral part of the offering. Hardware will be worthless without the apps, and vice-versa the app will be useless without hardware.
