Sales of 3D TVs in the China market are expected to top 10 million units in 2012, accounting for 25% of the local TV market, according to an estimate by industry sources in China. In 2011, 3D TV sales in China are likely to reach four million units, taking up a 12% share, market research firm GfK China has estimated.
However, China-based market research firm China Market Monitor (CMM) calculated that sales of 3D TVs in China totaled 1.253 million units, valued at CNY10.78 billion (US$1.71 billion), in the first three quarters of 2011.
Aggressive price strategies adopted by China-based branded TV vendors including Skyworth, Hisense, Changhong and TCL helped push up sales of 3D TVs, said the sources.
China-based branded TV vendors have also adopted low-priced CCFL-based 3D TVs, instead of using LED-backlight models, to penetrate into the 3D segment, the sources revealed.
With the China government to begin trail operations of 3D TV channels in 2012, demand for LED TVs is expected to rise in the coming year, added the sources.
