Dance games dominate in the month January

4 out of the top 10 games last month had gamers getting their groove on

Games with plastic instruments may be past their prime, but rhythm games that only require your own two feet are on the rise. According to statistics from research group NPD, 4 of the 10 top-selling titles across platforms in January were dance games. Just Dance 2Zumba Fitness: Join the PartyDance Central, and Michael Jackson: The Experience all had strong sales showings in the first month of the year. Among them, Dance Central employs the technology of Microsoft’s Kinect motion-based gaming system, using a 3D camera to judge your speed and style as you bust a move.

Call of Duty: Black Ops topped January’s sales figures, but was one of only two shooting games to make the list. It’s unclear if instrument simulation games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have truly passed the torch to dance games, but the figures do reveal a trend toward the kind of family-friendly gaming that packs a couch full to capacity.
