The 3DTV news keeps rolling in on the eve of CES. Discovery, Sony and IMAX announced a letter of intent for a joint venture to develop the first 24/7 cable channel in the US that will exclusively offer 3D programming.
The new channel plans to feature science and nature programming in addition to 3D movies, music videos, and game-related content. The three companies plan to roll out the channel by the end of this year or during 2011.
Sony may have an added benefit from the proposal when it launches its line of 3DTVs for the 2010 holiday shopping season. Sony will showcase the 3DTVs this week at CES.
“Sony is the only company with expertise in every part of the 3D value chain,” said Howard Stringer, Sony CEO. “We are delighted to be partnering with Discovery and IMAX, two premier companies also dedicated to leadership in 3D, in this groundbreaking new venture. It is clear to us that consumers will always migrate to a better and richer entertainment experience, and together we are determined to be the leader in providing that around the world.”
