Germany boasts good 3D TV sales

3D TV sales in Germany have exceeded expectations, according to the Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik, that’s the GFU to you and I.  The industry group has reported sales of the three dimensional enabled TVs to be 178,000 in 2010, bettering the expected figure of 150,000.

Speaking about the sales, Rainer Hecker of GFU said:

“We are extraordinarily happy with this result… 3D excites the audience. Now the countable figures confirm this trend.”

Many industry experts have predicted that 3D TV sales will only really take off from 2012 onwards, with healthy figures expected in 2014 where consumers electronics manufacturers are hoping that investments in 3D technology will begin to pay off in earnest.  3D TV sales in the majority of regions haven’t lived up to expectations, so it comes as good news for the market that in Germany at least they are doing well.

3D TV is however, outperforming the uptake of HD TV in terms of sales, which is remarkable given how recently the technology was introduced.  There were fears from some sections of the market that consumers would be reluctant to upgrade so soon after HD, and while 3D is currently the preserve of the enthusiasts, the signs from Germany are that such fears were premature.

Added to this the fact that more and more manufacturers are making their sets compatible with passive glasses, the necessary accessories for 3D TVs are set to become cheaper, allowing people to enjoy 3D in larger numbers more easily, and more importantly, at less expense.  Passive glasses which are used in cinemas, are lighter and don’t require power, making for a more comfortable 3D viewing experience, and ultimately, a greater attraction to prospective 3D TV owners.
