In an afternoon press event at the Venetian we were offered a glimpse into “Global CE Market Trends” presented by Tim Herbert, senior director market research for CEA.
Here’s what we learned:
Worldwide revenue at retail is estimated to be $694 billion in 2008. Revenue for 2009 is projected to grow by only 4.3% to $724 billion. This compares with 13.7% growth from 2007 to 2008.
The geographic pie is comprised of 1/3 North/South America (North America is 20%), 1/3rd Asia, and 1/3rd Europe/Middle East/Africa. Fast growing economies and large emerging middle class countries include Brazil, Russia, India and China.
Product mix is as follows: 27% mobile phones, 22% TV, 16% PC, 5% cameras/camcorders, and 30% other (game consoles, MP3, printers, accessories).
Trends to watch:
- Macro trend of work, play and communicate anywhere, anytime.
- North America is in a transition to smartphones following the lead of other geographic areas.
- Blu-ray is expected to take off in 2009 with unit sales and revenue doubling from 2008.
