And yet the studios are going all out for this format as a way to boost depressed boxoffice figures. DreamWorks itself went 3-D with Puss in Boots, set to be released on November 4. This prequel of the Shrek animated saga has Guillermo del Toro as executive producer and the voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek.
Warner Brothers will also release Happy Feet Two, an animated feature with Elijah Wood, Robin Williams and Sofia Vergara in the vocal cast. Disney will be on 3-D screens with The Muppets, who are set to make a movie comeback after 12 years, while 20th Century Fox will release Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked.
But it is not just well-known directors and animated films that want to make the most of the 3-D hype. So do the lesser known productions, such as the remake of the 1978 horror film Piranha and the movie Dolphin Tale, starring Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr and Ashley Judd.
The fourth film in the Mission: Impossible saga, starring Tom Cruise, also opted for the first time for the 3-D and IMAX format, as did the umpteenth big-screen adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers. …
