Mobile TV service MediaFLO (from KDDI and Qualcomm) announced a deal with Audiovox at a CES press event that will expand its service beyond cell phones. They outlined a deal with Audiovox to create in-car video displays that receive the live MediaFLO broadcast service.
The agreement will first result in a MediaFLO receiver that targets existing after-market in-car displays, and later lead to displays for new vehicles. The system is expected to sell for under $500, with “very affordable monthly service fees”.
The current MediaFLO service is marketed by Verizon and AT&T to cell subscribers. The $15/month base service includes 10-15 channels from the likes of CBS, NBC, Fox and MTV. With the new spectrum available after February 17, MediaFLO expects to offer 25 channels and expand its coverage from 65 markets to 107 by year’s end.
