3D images of the closest planet to the Sun
The MESSENGER mission will soon provide us with new images of Mercury: the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS) stereo camera will be imaging almost the entire surface of Mercury in 3D. But we will have to wait for a short time for its first images, “the optics must be protected from the hot environment until the volatile elements that have accumulated on the spacecraft during its years in flight have evaporated,” explains Jurgen Oberst from the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, also a member of the MESSENGER Science Team.
