The Open Mobile Video Coalition – an association of 23 television broadcasters operating more than 450 stations – held a press conference yesterday detailing their plans for the roll-out of Mobile DTV-enabled broadcasts on 63 stations in 22 markets (covering 35% of U.S. households).
LG, Samsung, and Kenwood demonstrated a variety of ready for market products that were able to receive Mobile DTV signals. At the end of the presentation they showed a working demo of the local CW affiliate broadcasting onto a Mobile DTV-enabled laptop.
The obvious questions at the end of the presentation centered around how these handheld devices would get to market since the phone carriers were likely reluctant to cannibalize their own media sales. Carrier support is important to Mobile DTV’s success because it allows targeted advertising with a managed return path. Questions about whether there should be regulatory help due to the systems effectiveness in transmitting emergency broadcasts were met with diplomatic responses akin to “no comment.”
