Phil Lelyveld will be the featured speaker at the Access Executive Network’s Art, Technology, and Business of 3D presentation

The AccessEN monthly forum will feature a presentation on the art, technology, and business of 3D by Phil Lelyveld, the founder of the Consumer 3D Experience Lab at USC School of Cinematic Art’s Entertainment Technology Center, on October 19, 2010, at 6:00 PM at the Center Club, 650 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa, Calif.

According to Mr. Lelyveld, the content industry has spent over 100 years developing tools and techniques to tell engaging stories and cover real-world events in two dimensions. The CE and distribution industries have similarly spent generations developing products and resources to connect consumers to entertainment and to each other.

“The current renaissance of 3D is an unexpected consequence of the entertainment and consumer electronics industries’ conversion from analog to digital technology,” Mr. Lelyveld noted. “Artistic techniques, hardware, and software tools that work in 2D are being rethought and modified for 3D in both the professional and consumer markets. Decisions about image capture, data formats, metadata, and file management will determine what 3D consumer product features can be developed, and the nature of the 3D experiences that consumers will enjoy. My talk will present an overview of the current situation, including emerging areas that entrepreneurs can consider for product and service development.”

The Lab, which is funded by the CTOs of the six major Hollywood studios, major post production, CE and IT companies, and others, addresses stereoscopic 3D in the home, on personal devices, in public spaces, in advertising, and in theatres.

Mr. Lelyveld is an entertainment technology business development consultant whose recent work includes producing the International 3D Society’s first “3D University,” authoring a second annual report on future business opportunities for the post production industry, and developing proposals for ‘The Future of Museums in the Digital Age.’ He has significant expertise in the technical, legal, and business issues associated with the production, distribution, and monetization of content and services, which he acquired during his 10 years in Disney’s corporate New Technology and New Media strategy group. Mr. Lelyveld has degrees from UCLA (MBA), Stanford (MS Geophysics), and Tufts (BS Engineering). He is a frequent panelist and public speaker at media-related events, including the Sundance Film Festival, 3D Entertainment Summit, Dutch Media Hub, Seoul Digital Forum, Digital Policy Summit, NAB, Digital Hollywood, E3, and the TeleManagement Forum.
