Skype announced today plans that take the service beyond the desktop to mobile phones, cars, appliances and televisions. Skype is used by 370 million users around the world, an increase of more than 50% from the previous year.
Skype announced an “all new Skype” for Windows which includes a redesigned interface, full-screen video calling (up to 30 fps), and a higher efficiency audio codec enabling its use even on mobile connections. Earlier this week, they debuted a new version for the Macintosh with some unique features including WiFi hotspot access management and screen sharing. Last month, Skype was made available for Windows Mobile devices. Today, they announced that they will operate on Android devices.
Skype is working towards implementing their software in Mobile Internet Devices (MID), appliances, and even TVs. Expect to see televisions soon with cameras built in that can enable video calling.
Finally, in these tight economic times, Skype is receiving inquiries from large corporations looking to reduce their telecom costs. (The company explained that 30% of current usage involves business communication, rather than personal.) Skype is creating a number of business services for large enterprises that will address concerns for security and control. If you’d like to learn more, please send an email to dennis.kuba@disney.com.
