Following a huge number of entries from all over the globe, Sony and 3D World magazine have announced the winners of their stereoscopic-3D (S-3D)filmmaking competition.
The three overall winners for their 3D short films are Physics of Surfing by Greg Passmore, Scalable City by Sheldon Brown and Pedro’s new bike by Per Nyman.Entries were scrutinised by a judging panel which included Buzz Hays, senior vice president of Sony’s 3D technology center in California, 3D film director JulianNapier, Lee Danskin, training and development director at Escape Studios, Sony Europe’s Richard Palk and members of the editorial team at Future Publishing’s3D World magazine.
With the entries coming from as far as New Zealand to Japan, Sweden to Mexico, judges based their decisions on a combination of technical ability, 3Dentertainment value and quality of 3D rendering. Winner Greg Passmore is president of PassmoreLab, a San Diego-based multi- media production studio. Runner up Sheldon Brown is an artist who works in many types of media including virtual reality, computer games, public art, sculpture and cinema. Per Nyman, from Sweden, is a keen student of film and graphics, having spent the past few years training in 3D graphics, computer game development and interactive media.
The top three entries all receive a brand new Sony BRAVIA 3D HD TV with active shutter glasses and a BDV-F700 Blu-ray disc home cinema system,and the seven runners-up each win a Sony BRAVIA LX900 3D HD TV!Steve Jarratt, editor of 3D World magazine, said, “The competition has surpassed our expectations both in terms of numbers and quality of entries. We really dohave some great, budding 3D filmmakers out there! “We set out with the aim of making this competition push our readers in terms of what they can do with animation, motion graphics and visual effects. And, as one of the leading players in the 3D arena, Sony was the perfect partner for us to find the latest 3D talent.”
