Sony’s 3D projector promises the ultimate home cinema experience
Sony has unveiled a new 3D home cinema projector which promises the ultimate Avatar experience in your living room.
For the home cinema market, Sony has opted to use active shutter glasses technology in its new VPL-VW90ES 3D projector, rather than the passive (non-powered) glasses found in cinemas.
Active shutter glasses tend to be heavier and more expensive than passive glasses and work by syncing the left and right eye shutters with the on-screen image at a high refresh rate.
To achieve true depth of colour and brightness, the projector features Sony’s Advanced Iris 3 technology – this enables a dynamic contrast ratio of 150,000:1 for a more realistic balance between extremes of light and dark.
The projector broadcasts in full 1080p HD and can simulate 3D images from old 2D films, providing a new twist on old classics from your DVD collection.
“The launch of our first 3D home projector marks the latest step in Sony realising its 3D World vision,” said Jonathan White, director at Sony Professional. “From capturing images in 3D, through to the production and delivery stages, Sony is uniquely placed to deliver an incredible 3D viewer experience both at home and in the cinema.”
And with Sony’s PlayStation 3 games console ready to embrace the third-dimension, the projector is promising hardcore gamers the ultimate 3D gaming experience.
Mr White added: “People will be able to play a rapidly increasing number of 3D titles such as Gran Turismo 5 and Wip3out in crystal clear high definition, something we believe is going to appeal hugely to the gaming community.”
Unlike some other noisy projectors, Sony has fitted a quieter cooling fan with a 22 decibel limit.
The projector will be available across Europe in November 2010.
