2020 3D Media Spatial Sound and Vision: D5.15 Surround video manipulation and interaction

[Published whitepaper]

1. Public Executive Summary

This document reports on the 2020 3D Media R&D w.r.t. surround video manipulation and interaction. Tools have been created for manipulating captured surround video both for live as well as post production. Though not strictly spoken a surround video manipulation, surround video stitching research is being described as well. Finally, a software framework, called panocle, has been created to allow users to interact with immersive video among other in an immersive projection environment. Four prototypical, but already eye-catching, applications built on top of this panocle framework are described.

…  One of the goals of the 2020 3D Media project was to develop surround video as a tool for conventional media production and as a novel medium by itself. Several iterations and kinds of panoramic and omni-directional compact multi- camera systems have been designed, developed and realised (figure 1), together with capture servers and software. Both low cost small cameras have been built, for instance for the 2020 3D media partner CREW to use in creative content production and immersive cinematography research, as well as several panoramic camera systems for high end sports broadcasting, to be commercialized by the recently founded start up company camargus (www.camargus.com). These camera systems have a resolution ranging from 4 megapixels at 25 frames per second at the low end to 32 megapixels at 60 frames per second at the high end, and various field of views.
