The three-dimension (3D) TV market is expected to represent 3% of the overall TV shipment in 2010 with 6.2 million units to be sold this year, including about five million 3D LCD TVs and 1.2 million 3D plasma display panel (PDP) TVs, according to Displaybank.

In addition to the 2010 figure, the major display market research firm forecasted that 33 million 3D TVs in 2012, and 83 million are expected to be sold by 2014, representing 31% of the overall TV market.

In terms of technology, 3D LCD TV market is expected to reach 5.1 million units this year to represent 81% of total 3D TV market, and such technology is expected to be mainly applied to premium products utilizing Full-HD and 240Hz in large-sized TVs with over 40-inch screen. By 2014, Displaybank said, 3D LCD TV market size would reach about 70 million units to represent 28% of all LCD TV market.

In 2010, 3D PDP TV is expected to penetrate 8% of all PDP TV market, but by 2014, the research firm said, most of PDP TV makers are expected to apply 3D functionality. Then, 3D PDP TV is expected to represent 99% of all PDP TVs.

The shutter glass type would be the mainstream 3D TV technology type in 2010. Excluding LG Electronics, other major TV makers including Samsung Electronics, Sony and Panasonic are go to launch 3D LCD TV models in either shutter-glass type and polarizer-glass type. Displaybank expects the glassless type 3D TVs to be unveiled in 2014.

According to Displaybank, 3D TV market is expected to see sharp growth marking year 2010 through the aggressive strategies by makers. In 2010, the 3D TV model lineup of four major players, including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, is expected to expand to 40 models or more, including those planned to be launched. The combined sales target of the four companies is about 6.9 million units for 2010.

During the second half of 2010, when 240Hz panels have been launched by major thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel makers, Displaybank said, other TV makers are expected to participate in the 3D TV game. However, it would take sometime for 3D TV models to become mainstream in the overall TV market.
