Sony: With 3D, It’s Personal

Sony continued its 3D push at CES. “2011 begins the next phase of our 3D strategy,” said Sir Howard Stringer, chairman, CEO and president of Sony. “This is the year that 3D becomes personal. It is far more than a sci-fi gimmick. It mirrors reality itself.”

Sony announced a string of 3D consumer electronics devices, including:

— 3D Handycam: 3D Full HD camcorder with glasses free LCD display (3.5 inch). Scheduled to ship in April for around $1500.

— 3D Bloggie: Same attributes as the previous Bloggie, plus 3D. Includes a glasses-free 3D LCD screen. Scheduled for spring availability. Priced at $250.

— 3D Cybershot: Digital camera takes HD video and 3D stills. Less than $220.

— VAIO F Series 3D laptop: Start at around $1,700 and will be available next month for pre-orders.

— Expanded line of 3D Bravia TVs and Blu-ray players.

Sony’s line of professional 3D production products, including cameras, will also expand. At the Sony CES booth, visitors can also get a peak at future 3D products. The exhibit includes a 3D head mount display; glasses-free portable 3D BR player (10.1-inch screen); and several autostereo displays including a 46-inch and 56-inch LCD panel, as well as a 24.5-inch OLED panel.
