Techie parents of the world, rejoice! French company Withings is showing its new “Smart Baby Monitor,” a compact single unit that streams video, audio, and environmental information to a parent’s Internet-connected device of choice. Parents can watch streaming video of their sleeping child, stream music (lullabies, etc.) back to the baby, or simply use their device and receive alerts if the child makes noise.
In a modern cube design, the monitor opens to reveal the 3-megapixel camera, microphone, speakers, thermometer, and humidity sensors. Infrared LEDs provide night vision, and temperature and humidity sensors keep parents posted on the state of the room.
The app to control the device allows parents to set their own parameters for alerts (e.g., notify me if the baby makes noises over a certain decibel level), so parents can continue to use the device and switch back to the baby monitor view only when alerted.
Withings markets the product like it’s just for iPhone and iPad, but says it’s compatible with any Internet-connected device. Price to be determined, the Smart Baby Monitor will be available direct-to-consumer through the Withings website in March 2011.
