The world of at-home 3D television is becoming an increasing reality, with local cable provider Charter adding on-demand film service.
Charter 3D On Demand offers selected instant 3D films to virtually all of the company’s Western North Carolina subscribers, company spokeswoman Kristina Hill said.
“What you will need is a 3D television and to be a Charter HD customer,” she said. Customers will watch the 3D films using the special glasses that came with their 3D TVs, she said. The 3D films are priced at $6.99 a view. Charter’s On Demand channel 1 contains a folder listing the 3D films available and information on ordering, Hill said. …
Meanwhile, the cost of 3D televisions has continued dropping, with some smaller screen models down to around $500 and possibly even lower during the Black Friday day-after-Thanksgiving sales. The satellite television service Direct TV is offering 3D films, sports and events to customers, and competitor Dish Network also offers a 3D on demand service.
“Hollywood studios are determined to make 3D work,” said Bill Banowsky, owner of the Carolina Asheville cinemas on Hendersonville Road. “There is more and more 3D products coming every month.” …
