Walt Disney fans in Japan will be able to add a 3D phone to their collection of memorabilia, as the entertainment company releases an Android-based smartphone with branded content next month.
The Los Angeles-based company is releasing a smartphone that runs on Google’s Android 2.2 operating system through Japanese carrier Softbank. The phone — based on Sharp’s Galapagos 003SH model — features a 3.8-inch liquid crystal display with auto-stereoscopic technology, which let users watch videos and play games in 3D without the use of glasses.
It also comes with a 9.6-megapixel camera with the ability to record 720p high-definition videos, a 1-gigahertz chip and 400-megabytes of internal memory.
Disney is also adding a slate of branded content, including a Disney email address and six custom cases, themed around its iconic characters, such as a Mickey Mouse-patterned white, Minnie Mouse polka dots and Cinderella Castle-print, among others.
Disney’s cooperation with Google is a first, as well as a surprise, since Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, whorecently announced a medical leave, sold Pixar to Disney and now sits on the entertainment giant’s board of directors.
