Guest Interview: Rick Dean, THX Ltd

Q: What is your perspective on the home cinema industry at the moment, what trends do you see?

A: The home theatre industry has seen some great technologies emerge in recent years which have allowed the performance of home displays to rival even those of post-production studios. Whether it’s high-resolution 2D/3D displays or premium sound, the industry has taken a significant step forward in preserving the integrity of the artist’s original intent. Consumers are now offered an experience that once was only available in post-production studios.

Hollywood studios and the production community have also contributed significantly to industry progress through added attention to the quality of premium content. This hasn’t come without bumps in the road. For example, the first iterations of 3DTV missed the mark in the eyes of consumers. However, the industry learned from this and listened to customer requests. Now we see that the focus of 3D has shifted to what constitutes a quality, comfortable 3D experience. This is something we at THX actively participate in and support through our THX 3D Certification Program.

Enhanced sound quality will continue to play a key role in the overall consumer entertainment experience. How we achieve this is a topic of serious debate. The technology community wants to put more speakers in the viewing room. I believe we need to make a concerted effort to do more with the systems in which consumers have already invested.  …
