DTS audio technologies, such as DTS surround sound, are widely used in home theaters, computers and in-car entertainment systems. The US firm has just set up a sprawling R&D facility in Singapore to better reach out to its consumers and partners in Asia. We spoke with Jon Kirchner, chairman and CEO of DTS, as well as Frederick L. Kitson, DTS executive vice president and chief technology officer, on all things audio affecting the consumer space. Q. Looking at traditional A/V components, what do you think is the next natural progression for high-definition surround sound technologies such as DTS-HD Master Audio?
If you think about your experiences in 3D such as a helicopter up in the air or a thunderstorm, there’s actually a lot of energy coming above you. So as humans, we’ve experienced these situations and DTS is able to recreate them in living rooms and other environments. I think this is what consumers want. The world is 3D, audio is 3D and we want to experience 3D.
We’re on a roadmap there and we’ve already introduced the first one (Neo:X 3D audio-processing with simulated height effects) and the second-generation version is now running in the Labs. There will be a final generation after that. …
