Good news for people who don’t like watching 3D sports with glasses: you will only have to wait until 2022!
In its bid for the 2022 World Cup, Japan is proposing to shoot all of its games in 3D and then beaming them holographically onto 400 pitches around the world.
Each game will be filmed by 200 high-definition 3D cameras positioned around the stadium and sound would be recorded by mics under the pitch.
If Japan gets its way, each event will be powered by electricity generated by fans cheering and stamping their feet, and supplemented by solar panels on stadium roofs.
Japan has joined the UK, South Korea, Qatar, the US and Russia in presenting their bids to FIFA. The winners of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be announced on 2 December.
Feasible? We think so, but with today’s technology you’d probably need a hell of a lot of dry ice or water vapour to project the images onto.
Our only advice? Stay out of the light! Laser beams! Pewww-peww-pew-pew!!!
