During his company’s press event, Tim Alessi, director of new product development, offered additional details regarding new product lines from LG.
In mobile communications, LG claims that the Android smartphone Optimus is the world’s first 1GHz dual core processor phone and is capable of recording and playing back full 1080p video content. LG reports that the Optimus Black is the world’s slimmest smartphone (0.36-inches thick) with the brightest screen, the 4-inch NOVA Display.
We should also note that a good portion of the NVIDIA press conference was spent demonstrating the strengths of the NVIDIA technology within LG’s Optimus 2X phone. The phone, which runs on Android, can process over eight applications at once. NVIDIA has developed a Flash player to take advantage of the new NVIDIA GPU capabilities. They also demonstrated the full 1080p display capability via an HDMI connection to a full size display.
LG’s 3D initiatives include the launch of TVs and laptops with “filmed pattern retarder” (FPR) displays that offer a 180-degree 3D viewing angle. (It is a polarized screen, but Alessi never said “polarized” versus “active shutter”). Complementing its 3D video initiative, LG announced a vertical 3D audio effects channel for a “Cinema Dome Effect”.
LG’s Cinema 3D line of products uses the FPR technology to reduce crosstalk and create a more comfortable viewing experience. The glasses are cheaper and lighter than active shutter glasses. Their market research shows that consumers do not perceive any loss of resolution from this alternative to active shutter technology. Alessi predicts that the Cinema 3D technology will be a winner in 2011.
As for picture quality, LG will include their NANO Full LED technology in a number of their LCD and Plasma screens. This technology creates a brighter image via a layer of back-lighting LEDs.
Overall, LG announced 31 new LCD TV models, 12 new plasma TV models, 12 new A/V products including many Blu-ray drives that are 3D-capable, and a number of projects and storage devices.
