While Panasonic and Sony have been strong advocates for active shutter 3D technology, their ailing TV businesses are forcing both companies to adopt the cheaper LG’s passive 3D solution. This new development is based on a newspaper report by The Korea Times citing an LG senior executive.
According to Nho Seok-Ho, head honcho of LG’s LCD TV division, “Panasonic and Sony are planning to expand the lineup of 3D-enabled TVs this year. The key point is that their upcoming models will use LG’s technology”.
“The fact that more 3D TVs from Panasonic and Sony will be equipped with LG technology is significant as Japanese TV makers account for over 30 percent of the global 3D TV demand”, added Nho.
While Panasonic has already unveiled its ET5-series passive 3D TVs at CES back in January, Sony has yet to announce any concrete plans to go passive.
The passive 3D (Film Patterned Retarder) technology developed by LG uses inexpensive 3D glasses and delivers flicker-free, as well as brighter 3D visuals. However, the drawbacks include narrower horizontal viewing angles and visible black scan lines at shorter viewing distances.
