The MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF) announced that a new 3DTV Working Group will hold its first meeting this Saturday, January 9, at CES. The 3DTV Working Group consists of founding members Motorola, Harmonic, dicas, NetLogic, MainConcept and TDVision. The meeting is open to MPEGIF members and any interested industry participants.
Their goal is to close the gap between content mastering (covered by SMPTE) and content display (represented by CEA), and facilitate a coordinated course of action for technology standardization and business model creation.
“3DTV is not just the ‘hot topic of the day’ – it’s the natural evolution of digital media for the home. As we are seeing in the cinema, modern 3D creates a better and more immediate experience that was ever possible before,” said Dr. Sean McCarthy, chair of MPEGIF’s 3DTV Working Group. “Today, the technology and ecosystem issues surrounding 3DTV distribution remind me of the challenges the industry faced a few years ago with the emergence of new MPEG4/AVC compression technologies. Yet, in other ways, 3DTV could become widespread much more quickly because 3DTV distribution can leverage existing MPEGbased headends, channels, and digital set top boxes.”
Saturday’s meeting will be held from 1:00-2:00 pm in Room 110 of the MGM Conference Center.
