Chris Chinnock, co-founder, 3D@Home Consortium and president, Insight Media predicted that there would be 3.5 million 3D-ready TVs in homes by the end of 2009, and reach 6.5 million in 2010.
He spoke Wednesday on a panel titled “How Will We See 3D TV?” Speakers included TI’s Doug Darrow; David Naranjo, director of product development for Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America; Nicholas Routhier, president/CEO of Sensio; and Neil Wittering, international strategic business manager, projectiondesign. NYT’s Eric Taub moderated the discussion.
Most of the speakers agreed that a defacto standard for packaged media could start to drive the market by the end of 2009 or during 2010, while a distribution standard is further off.
Darrow suggested that movies would be the content driver, noting that more than 40 3D features will be released in the next three years. He added that PPV events could bring incremental revenue.
