The Royal Opera House is to screen a 3D performance of Carmen in at least 2,000 cinema screens across the world in March in a move to think more commercially.
Following successful negotiations with cinema chains in the past week, the Royal Opera House’s first foray into 3D cinema will be shown on about 1,000 screens in North America, 500 to 600 in Europe and 400 in Asia and Australia.
With public spending for the arts coming under increasing pressure, Tony Hall, the chief executive of the Royal Opera House, is looking to transform the Royal Opera House into a commercial enterprise.
In the summer, the Royal Opera House teamed up with 3D cinema technology provider, RealD, to film Francesca Zambello’s production of Carmen in Covent Garden.
