Workflow Supersession: Tron and Social Network

An in-depth look at the production and workflow of The Social Network and Tron: Legacy were featured in the Tuesday afternoon sessions of the HPA Tech Retreat.

The Social Network
–Billed as the first movie shot with Red’s MX sensor
–Workflow included the use of LightIron’s Outpost DI system, a mobile DI configuration.
–A hero DCDM was essentially considered the film’s master.
–LightIron co-founder Michael Cioni: “The beauty of raw image capture is that it is like a container. As time goes on, we can apply new science and the result improves.”

Tron: Legacy
–400 Terabytes of 3D data.
–Various versions for theatrical release, including 35mm, 3D digital cinema, 2D digital cinema, Imax film, Imax digital
–“Previz is the cheaper part, where you can experiment without the cost impact”
–FileMaker database program used to track versions
–Pix used, “precursor to computing in the cloud”
–Used Google Docs for notes as part of the collaboration. “We’d like communication tools to make it easier for us to stay on the same page,” said editor James Haygood. “I would like to see Avid and Pix more integrated.”
–Haygood: “Minor changes” to the cut for 2D compared with 3D
